I Found My Passion!

by Aniyah Heath

When I was younger I had always wanted to be a veterinarian or a painter. But as I

have grown, my passion turned into my freshman year of high school. Since I love the

refreshing feeling of having great teeth, I got inspired to want to further my

education in the medical field. What helped make this decision was being a part of

the Shu Ha Ri class. I started to analyze myself more and realized that I love working

with people and seeing them smile. To smile is one thing but to be happy and not shy

about it, is another thing. So to be more specific I plan to pursue my education on

helping people take care of their pearly whites or not so pearly whites as a future

Dental Hygienist. Yes, it’s not the cleanest job but I’m not afraid of a challenge.

Quarantine in Mexico

By Camila Venegas

During this quarantine I’ve been stuck in Mexico. I am currently in Naco, Sonora. It’s a small town right by  Agua Prieta and Canannea; also it’s a cross border town so there’s Naco and Bisbee, AZ. The borders are starting to close and are only open from 6 am to 10 pm every day. Only US citizens can cross- people with visas are not allowed to cross. Here in Mexico, we also are in quarantine (cuarentena); on Monday they passed a new rule in the whole state of Sonora stating that people are only able to leave or go out for specific needs such as going to the groceries or going to the pharmacy. There is also only supposed to be 1 prison per car no more than one and if you are out you must have a face mask and gloves on but since many people where not listening they’ve extended quarantine till May 30.

Since I’ve been here, I’ve been doing my school work being stuck at home with my family members.  I’ve also been visiting my family ranch a little more than usual. Since we’ve been in quarantine my family and I have been playing lotería every night but we play with money so every time we play  we have to pay 3 pesos and whoever wins takes all the money that was put in the center.

Quarantine with Family

By Aniyah Heath

During this quarantine, what I have been up to is school and just being at home with family. Every day I get up to pray and thank God I woke up and to help me throughout the day. I then do my bed and get all my chores done. After all my chores are done I then get some breakfast to eat. After or while I’m eating breakfast I’m doing homework assignments. I try to get enough done so my sister can then get on the computer. We only have one computer so we gotta share it. After I finish some work I then clean up a bit around the house. Since everything we do has to be at home I’ve had enough time to do my backyard. For the past three days me and my dad have gotten all of the weeds in the backyard done. It was fun because I got to burn all of them down. It’s fun now that my mom gets to be home and not be at work all the time. So me and my siblings get to spend more time with family. The things we do is; color, make bracelets, play games, watch movies, and just spend more time with each other. The thing I miss the most about going out is going to school, no lie haha. I miss going to church, and especially going to work. This is a really hard change for all of us. People are so used to being active they are now staying at home trying to figure out activities to keep them busy. In this time of pandemic, people have lost their jobs, students have lost graduation, and families have lost loved ones. I pray that everything gets better and that this would give all of us an awakening that we should not take advantage of our everyday lives.

What I have learned about myself during this quarantine is that I need to be patient with myself. Not everything is going to come at my timing but at God’s timing. I asked my older sister how she felt about quarantine and she said “I felt like this had happened because God was trying to give us an awakening to not take advantage of every day we wake up. Having this happened has given me a lot of patience but has also given me more time with my family. I know with this happening people have lost their jobs or have started to work from home but if we look at the big picture families are growing closer together. So we just got to stay healthy and stay inside”. I also asked my mom and this was her response, “at first it was stressful, but then the peace of God has surrounded our home. So now that I’m home with my kids I feel more accomplished and even closer to my children than I was already. Family time, that we took for granted, is now more of a comfort that even through all of this we have each other. It helps me understand that we are not in control of tomorrow… it also gives me a firmer stance in my faith more than ever before”. If this ever happens again in the future, I can not control what I can not see. All we can do is continue the protocol of the hygiene guidelines but that is something we have always done anyway. The only thing we could do is build on our savings even more, because other than that we’ve stood on our faith and what is required of us to be safe.

Corona Virus: An Update

The Corona virus is a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans, Corona viruses cause respiratory tract infections that are typically mild, such as the common cold, though rarer from such as SARS, MERS, and COVID-19 can be lethal. Symptoms vary in other species: in Chickens, they cause a respiratory tract disease, while in cows and pigs they cause diarrhea. There are yet to be vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human Corona virus infections.

The outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in a live seafood, poultry and wild animal market, but it has now appeared in 11 other countries, including the United States. According to Chinese authorities, the Corona virus has killed at least 56 people and sickened at least 2,000.

The United States Government is not as worried as the citizens that live in the country. Citizens in the U.S are panicking because it’s a new virus- I don’t blame them because that’s good that all the citizens in the U.S are very cautious and aware. The U.S government is not as concerned as they believe they’ll get a cure very soon and warned all citizens to stay clean- always wash hands, keep distance around sick people, and stay home if you are sick.

The Corona virus has still to this day is spreading its more on the other side of the planet. The virus has infected more than 113,700 in at least 97 countries. Japan has 1100; S Korea 7,400; Iran 7,100; Italy has 9,100; China 80,700; and the U.S. has 600 plus.

In conclusion, we need to take this virus very seriously and stay very healthy so it won’t spread continually before we find a cure. Healthy as in always keep hands clean and try not to touch your face too much and avoid all contact with sick people and watch out for what you eat.

Westward Expansion

by Alexzandria Heath

Last Tuesday, we had a special speaker, Robert Valencia Jr. He was an Instructor from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. He talked about the westward expansion and how it has affected our society today.  Mr. Morey from American government invited him over to teach his class.

Pope Alexander VI issued a papal bull “Inter Caetera” which gave authorization to Spain to colonize Americas and its Native people as subjects, convert, and enslave in 1493.  This is what led to the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1949 issuing an agreement between Spain over lands newly discovered or explored by Christopher Columbus. This affected Native Americans because the government took over their lands without asking.

In 1851, the U.S. government attempted to negotiate peace with native tribes by assigning designated lands under protection of the Treaty of Fort Laramie. This meant that there was peace between the government and the natives. It was shortly broken when they started hunting resources on their sacred land. It lead to a second Fort Laramie treaty which combined the reservations and cut the land initially designated to the tribes by the government.  In 1823, the Supreme Court rendered Native Americans to have no power granting their land to only the government and no one else.

In 1831, Cherokee Nation v. Georgia stated that Indians were second class and didn’t have a say in what the government does to their lands. The year following Worchester v. Georgia stated that Native American were controlled by the federal government.  Native tribes at the end of the 19th century decreased in size of the reserved lands and declined in population. There was a rumor that gold and natural resources were produced on their lands. So the government decided to investigate. By the late 1800s mining companies invaded the tribal lands to mine for gold in the Black Hills, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. This pushed the Native American tribes further in reservations.

Native tribes still continue to struggle in the 21st century to maintain their lands from the federal government. They fight to preserve their lands because there has been invasion of pipelines and oil drilling. The pipeline plan, also referred to as Keystone XL Pipeline, affected 38 local tribal territories. They attempted to save their lands by making a declaration in opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline. The TransCanada, on the other hand, provided 9,000 new American jobs, increased government revenue, and it would be one of the safest pipeline ever constructed in the U.S. this company was trying to help out the native Americans. In the end this all leads back to how we treat our land and planet. We have so many things we could do to save it: reduce, reuse, recycle, and conserve our water. In reality we are too lazy to save it. There was a recent issue with our water. There were chemicals and contaminants found in tap water line causing people to get cancer. If we keep polluting our water, air and planet, the next generation to come after us won’t survive long. Our purpose should be to keep our planet alive so we can live longer.

The Mexican Feminine Crisis

Mexico has a reputation of being an unsafe place. Mostly known for decades of disappearing students, family relatives, government officials, reporters and drug cartel members- Mexico has a knack for “vendetta justice”. Currently, many females are being either being killed (by disposing their bodies into the sewer system) or disfigured by people throwing acid on their faces or bodies. Why are women being targeted? According news reports, women are being killed for their body parts and just for revenge towards other people’s mistakes.

Many women on March 9th ,2020 will not attend schools, work, and be off the streets to have a day without women and are going to the capital of Mexico – the Federal District to go protest violently. The government is just overlooking the murders of innocent females, including school teachers and students and many other places where women play a role in a the daily lives. Millions of Mexican women are attending the protest and are coming in with aggressive behaviors due to the murders of women all over the country, with no one saying anything about it. Mexican female police officers were assigned to control the protest due to all the protesters being females.

The government released data saying that average deaths of women on a daily basis is 10. Organizers named the movement “UnDiaSinNosotras” (one day without us) to show the government their apathy towards women, and that nothing is being done to protect the women of Mexico. With that femicide happening, Mexico is now considered one of the dangerous places for women to travel.

If you’re a woman, please avoid Mexico for now.

Narco -Related Music Can Get You Killed!

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is corrido.jpg

Music can be so touching and wide-reaching to an artist, but in other aspects it can lead to putting your life on the line. Simply just singing the wrong song at the wrong time and place, you could end up being a victim -counting on many other artist that have been killed by the Mafia in Mexico due to the disrespect that they feel from the artist and song, most definitely in their operating territory.

One of the best Mexican regional singer Valentin Elizalde “El Gallo de Oro” known as the Golden Rooster had many hits and with his famous Narco Corridos became more known.  Due to the fact he was the first of many to sing narco corridos, giving drug lord inspiration and honor and talk down or send a message to their rival enemies.

On November 25, 2006, Valentine at 27 of age was gunned down including his driver and assistant in Reynosa, Tamaulipas after his performance due to the corrido he performed named “A Mis Enemigos”, which contains lyrics that antagonize drug trafficking gang Los Zetas. Raul Hernández Barron, alleged murderer of Elizalde and member of Los Zetas, was arrested on 22 March 2008, in Coatzintla, Veracruz.

Chess Player Profile: Gary Kasparov

Garry Kasparov was born on April 13, 1963  in Baku Azerbaijan. Garry Kasparov is one of the greatest chess players of all time. Chess is very intelligent and interesting game. In order to really understand it, you need to understand all aspects of it.  Garry Kasparov understood the strategy it takes in order to play the game of chess well. He was able to make calculated moves in order to win with an advantage and also used his influence to gather a following in his unrelated movements. (Wikipedia).

Garry Kasparov is a dynamic player his key strengths were his exceptional intuition and ability to calculate in complex positions. Kasparov was well known for his deep opening preparation and aggressive play right from start.

Garry Kasparov was a Grand Masters who won two world championships, his first in the soviet junior match and his big win in Moscow, on November 9, 1985,at the age of 22, Garry Kasparov became the champion (1985, Kasparov). He was able to keep his title as undefeated for 13 years. At age twenty-two he was youngest world winning champion for chess. He lost his title in 2002 and then retied.             In 1983 a super computer was built and programmed for advanced chess matches. Garry played six matches against the super computer called deep blue. Pop Smoke

Pop smoke was an upcoming rapper that got murdered in a home invasion. His birth name was Bashar Barakah Jackson- he was born on July 20 1999. He was signed to Victor Victor worldwide and Republic Records. In 2019, he dropped the song “Welcome to the Party’’ which blew him up and was one of the songs that made him successful.

He had dropped his album “Meet the Woo” which had a lot of features with big artist , but he unfortunately was gunned down in his home. Pop smoke was barely getting his name out the public; a lot of people still don’t know who he was which doesn’t really matter because he was only 20 years old. The people who went in his house didn’t rob him but they had shot bullets around Pop Smoke’s house and he was hit by some of those stray bullets. A lot of people were saying that they had found his location through Instagram because Pop Smoke posted a picture with a lot of cash in his hands. The weird part is that they didn’t rob him- the intruders just shot him and ran… they could have stolen something so it was maybe a hit on Pop Smoke or someone wanted him gone. No need to try and get something out of Pop they just went in there to do a job so I think there could be someone behind this.

Junji Ito

Junji Ito

Junji Ito is a Japanese manga artist and writer he was born on July 31, 1963. He’s written many manga and my personal favorite is Long Dream. Junji Ito first began writing and drawing manga as a hobby while working as a dental technician in the early 1990s. His first short story won an honorable mention in Kazuo Umezu Prize later becoming his hit series Tomie( picture on the left.) His work is very different than other manga artist his characters usually find themselves victims of unnatural circumstances for no reason or there punished for major infractions for no real reason. They are suspenseful and keep the reader on their toes and with his unique art style the stories really come to life. Some of the recurring themes of Ito’s work include body horror, seemingly ordinary characters who begin to act out of irrational compulsion, the breakdown of society, deep-sea organisms, and the inevitability of one’s demise.
